German soldiers surrender in Italy. German soldiers, hands aloft in surrender, run toward a U.S. tank in Cisterna in western Italy in the closing phaes of the battle for the town, which fell to the Allies on May 25, 1944. Street fighting in the town lasted for a full day. Driving northward from Cisterna, the Allied Fifth Army penetrated the Germans, last defenses before Rome, the Italian capital, and entered the Eternal City on June 4. Seven days later, the Fifth and British Eighth armies had pursued the fleeing Germans past Viterbo, 40 miles north of Rome.
