U.S. cruiser Pittsburgh loses bow, but weathers Pacific typhoon. The U.S. cruiser Pittsburgh rides out the 120-knot typhoon which ripped 100 feet (30 meters) from here bow June 5, 1945 while the U.S. Third Fleet was in action off Okinawa. At least 21 U.S. warships were dameged, including four carriers and three battle-ships. There were no ships lost and no deaths. After the accident the Pittsburgh made ........ 900 mile (1,440 km.) voyage through the Pacific with .................... off, retutning to Guam, Advance Headquarter of U.S. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of Allied naval forces in the Pacific.
