The Normandie floats again. While the U.S.S. Lafayette, the former French liner Normandie, still lay helpless on her side, workmen swarned inside the ship sealing the hull in preperation fot reflaoting. She looked like this on May, 1942, four months after she burned and rolled on her side at her New York City pierwhile being fitted for service with the U.S. Navy. Cranes were removing her superstructure to reduce deckweight, workman were building bulkheads throughout her 1,000-feer lenght, and divers were sealing all openings. In early August, 1943, pumps were started and the big ship was partially righted, with her list decreased to 40 degrees. After additional work, she is scheduled to be rigged for war service.
