U.S. Navi pilots sink German submarines. Final moments of U-185 (type IXC40)after attack with homing torpedo Mark 24 by Avenger aircraft from USS carrier Core on 24 August 1943, Mid Atlantic. A damaged German submarine hit by depth bombsand strafed by a U.S. Navy plane sinks by the stern as members of its crew prepare to abandon ship. The enemy raider was one of two definetely sunk during a period of six weeks in the Atlantic Ocean by Lieutenant Robert P. Williams, pilot of an escort carrier-based U.S. Navy Avenger bomber. In the same period, Lieutenant Williams possibly sank a third U-boat and dammaged a fourth so badly that it could be destroyed by another pilot from the same carrier.
