New York City honors fleet admiral Nimitz U.S. fleet admiral Chester W. Nimitz, (in first car) rides atop the back seat of the automobile which carried the commander of the victorious Allied naval forces in the Pacific during the New York City parade honoring him and 13 Navy and Marine Corps Congressional Medal of Honor winners Oct. 9, 1945. An estimated four million persons greeted the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and the men who won the nation's highest award for valot. Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia (with Admiral Nimitz in rear seat of car) conferred the city's gold Medal of Honor and honorary citizenship on the hero of the Pacific war in a ceremony at City Hall.
