Allied casualties in Battle of Normandy. Ferried to England for medical treatment. American and British soldiers, wounded in the Battle of Normandy, lie on stretchers on the deck of an American LCT (landing craft, tank) vessel which carries the Alllied casualties across the Channel to England for hospitalization. In the first two weeks of fighting, after landing on the northern French coast on June 6, 1944, Allied casualties totalled 40,549 in killed, wounded and missing. Between June 6, and June 27, enemy casualties were more than 70,000. American infantry liberated the deep-water port of Cherbourg, on the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula on June 26, despite every effort by the Germans to hold their ground. Posssession of Cherbourg, third largest port in France, gives the Allied a main trans-Atlantic terminal through which armies and supplies can be moved in support of their expanding bridgehead.
