Wounded U.S. Army men learn to play badminton. U.S. soldiers who have had limbs amputated play a game of badminton in the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, the U.S. capital, as their fellow-patients look on. The handicapped men learn many new recreational and vocational skills, as part of the Army's reconditioning program. U.S. Acting Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson reported that Army casualties as on July 21, 1945, totalled 920,220. Total U.S. Navy casualties - which includes the Marines Corps and Coast Guard - as of July 23, were 138,622, bringing the over-all U.S. total of casualties to 1,058,842 (M). Of these, 569,696 Army men were wounded and 196,918 were killed; 72,066 Nave men were wounded, and 51, 219 killed. Of the Army wounded, 349,197 recovered and returned to duty.
