Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1. Captain John C.
Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1. Captain John C. Wilkinson, officer-in-charge of the London edition of Stars and Stripes, hands a civilian teletypist, Miss June Westlery, a message to be transmitted to the Paris office of the newspaper. Each edition of the London product is linked with the Paris office. The teletype circuit moves thousands of words daily between the offices in news and other messages. Captain Wilkinson, formerly with the Norfolk (Virginia) Virginian Pilot, writes the popular humor column of Hashmarks, originated over two years ago as a reservoir of humerous news items and now a column of poems, gags and witty comments on GI life. Typical gag: There are so many flying heroes now that when a Jerry pilot gets close to an American pilot, he pleads, Don't make an ace of yourself. Captain Wilkinson is known to enlisted men on the staff as Wilkie.
