Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1.
Stars and Stripes, G.I. Morale Booster No. 1. Assistant Managing Editor Jim Russell (right) of New York's PM supervises the makeup of a page-size galley. "Stars and Stripes"newsman, used to the fast, nimble fingers of U.S. makeupmen, find British hands much slower, more methodical. Where American makeup men put together pages in a complete form, Britens make up a page in a page-size galley (tray), such as that being worked on by gray-haired Harry Ellmen (center), Russell and James Frost (left), composing room foreman, who always confer on every page. After a page is made up in galley, it is then transferred to the form. Thus, one form requires two makeup men; in an American shop, one man would handle two whole form. Biggest difference in American steamlined layouts.
