NEW U.S. SUPER CARGO CARRIER NAMED HAWAII MARS''. The seven and half-ton Hawaii Mars, largest U.S. flying boat in operation and first of 20 super-cargo carriers which are to aid in the war against Japan, is shown towering over a twin-engined seaplane. The huge ship was christened on July 21, 1945, near the east coast U.S. City of Baltimore, by Mrs. Dewitt Clinton Ramsey, wife of U.S. Rear Admiral Ramsey. The new Mars has a wingspread of 200 feet (60 meters), and her 8,000-horsepower engines can fly her at speeds exceeding 225 miles (360 km.) per hour. The Hawaii Mars' sister ships will also be named for Pacific islands.
