AMERICA AT WAR. An American fighter plane clears its throat. One of the first stops in conditioning an American war plane for shipment overseas is a 30-minute run-up of the engine on clear 65-octane gasoline, using a corrosion-preventing oil. The pure low-octane gas burns out the high octane loaded gas, which has an affinity for sea air and would induce corrosion of the highly finished engine parts. The plane, the latest model P-51 Mustang fighter-bomber, is one of the hundreds of combat planes sent weekly by the United States to its Allies under Lend-Lease and to its own Air Forces throughout the world.
