Giant wings built for new seaplane Hercules Three hundred and twenty feet (97.5 meters) from tip to tip, and 13 feet (about 4 meters) thick at the hull, are the wings of this new Huges Hercules, the world's largest plane. It is shown here under construction at the Hughes aircraft plant in the U.S. Pacific coast state of California. The giant all-wood seaplane will be able to carry 750 soldiers and their wequipment non-stop from Honolulu to Tokyo. For its eight 3,000-horsepower engines the Hercules will carry 40 tons of gasoline, and when completed will have a gross weight of more than 200 tons. If uses as a hospital ship, it will accomodate doctors, nurses, and 350 patients on stretchers. The Hughes Aircraft Company hopes to use it in peacetime as an intercontinental cargo carrier.
