A U.S. truck is shown in England carrying parts to build a Bailey bridge, new type span used by the Allies in Italy and France which can cross any gap 240 feet wide without pontoons, and with pontoons, can bridge even wider gaps. Three trucks of this size can transport the accessories to build 20 feet of a Bailey bridge. Fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle, the spans are first built on rollers on an embankment and then pushed over the crossing by building crews without any mechanical aid. There are 17 parts to the spans and nine for the foundation. Each joint requires only one steel pin.
