Freedom of workship returns to Metz. U.S.
1944
Freedom of workship returns to Metz. U.S. soldiers kneel in prayer during Mass, held in the Metz Cathedral for the first time since the French city's liberation November 22, 1944 by troops of the Third U.S. Army. During the four years of Nazi oppression, places of workship were either closed of watched by the Gestapo. When Lieutenant General George S. Patton's men swept into Metz, capturing more than 3,500 prisoners, civilians flocked to the cathedral to give thanks to God for their liberation.
