French and U.S. generals see Americans advance through Paris. As the Americans advanced through the French capital after its liberation August 25, 1944, General Charles de Gaulle, president of the French Committee of National Liberation, and other French leaders, including General Jacques Philippe Leclerc, Commander of the Second French Armered Division, as well as Lieutenant General Omar N. Bradley, Commander of the 12th U.s. Army Group, watched a U.S. infantry division march into the Place de la Concord. The Tricolor and the Stars and Stripes flew side by side as the Americans marched through the French capital, hot on the heels of the retreating and shattered Germans armies.
