German airplane tanks provide canoes for French children. Canoes made out of German airplane tanks by U.S. soldiers awaiting redeployment at the Assembly Area Command and given to the children of Reims provide the craft for a boat race on the Aisne-Marne canal at Reims, August 7, 1945. The children hold their paddles ready for the start, to be given by Private Roy J. Ebbens (with hands cipped to his mouth) of Chicago, Illinois, in a regatta conducted by American soldiers and attended by 250 children. The children call their novel canoes 'nourrice' which means 'wet nurses', and is also the name used for reserve tanks.
