French rebuild Montebourg. Close to one of the first Allied landing places, the town of Montebourg was blasted and burned by the Nazis as they fled. For a few weeks, this village was almost completely uninhabited after the Nazis retreated June 20, 1944. Nearly every house suffered in the battle. But the people of Montebourg are returning to rehabilitate their homes. Paul Boulot, long known as the best mason in Montebourg, is shown here on a ladder insetting stone from the wreckage to repair standing walls. Adolphe Hamel is sawing and Augste Cardot is mixing cement. These three men have already made many houses livable. Next door, a barber shop is in business again, down the street the grocery has reopened. There has already been a motion picture show in town and 300 people filled the hall.
