The end of German resistance at St. Malo. White smoke covers the Fort Nationale, ancient Nazi-hel fort off St. Malo, Brittany, as U.S. artillery blasts it from positions on the mainland. Days after the town of St. Malo itself was in American hands, German forces were still holding out in the forts and Citadel, where they were entrenched 60 feet underground. On the afternoon of August 17, 1944, after merciless and prolonged bombings, the fanatical Colonel von Auloch, commander ot the Citadel, sent up the white flag and marched out to surrender to American forces at the head of 650 men despite his vow to Hitler not to give up.
