Black smoke rises from hits scored on Nazi positions by 3,000 Allied planes which poured 6,000 tons of explosives on enemy lines west of St. Lo preceding the launching of a new American offensive in Normandy July 25, 1944. The next day, U.S. tanks and infantry broke through the main German line, capturing Marigny, four miles south of the St. Lo-Periers road, St. Gilles, about three and one-half west of St. Lo, and La Chappelle en Juger.
