Commanding officers of the German garrison there signed unconditional surrender terms May 8, 1945, and 28,000 Germans in the French coastal resistance pocket around the port were given up to the 66th U.S. Infantry Division. St. Nazaire was one of the three French Channel ports defended bitterly by the Nazis even after the war moved into Germany.
