St. Nazaire surrenders. German prisoners are shown as they were rounded up May 28, 1945, at the submarine base of St. Nazaire, the last German-occupied city of France to surrender. Commanding officers of the German garrison there signed unconditional surrender terms May 8, 1945, and 28,000 Germans in the French coastal resistance pocket around the port were given up to the 66th U.S. Infantry Division. St. Nazaire was one of the three French Channel ports defended bitterly by the Nazis even after the war moved into Germany.
