American soldiers watch for snipers. Private First Class Muriel K. Slade of Waskam, Texas, and Private Joseph W. Handin of Mclean, Texas, have their machine gun ready as they watch for Nazi snipers after driving the Germans from Angers in the sweeping U.S. offensive. In a call to all Allied forces, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Allied Expeditionary Force, issued an Order of the Day August 14, 1944, saying: Allied soldiers, sailors and airmen - thourg your combined skill, valor and fortitude, you have created in France a fleeting but definite opportunity for a major Allied victory, one whose realization will mean notable progress toward the final downfall of our enemy.
