St. Lo, after battle. This photograph shows a section of the devastated town of St. Lo after its capture by American troops July 18, 1944.Troops and supply vehicles can be seen moving up to reinforce the advancing Allied armies along a road which has just been cleared by U.S. Army engineers aided by bulldozers and other equipment. The shell-schattered buildings and debris in what was once a valuable Nazi communications center bear testimony to the fierceness of the onslaught which preceded the fall of the town and the intense Nazi shelling which lasted until Allied bombers knocked out the positions south of the town seven days later.
