American Military Government in Germany.

1945

American Military Government in Germany. Kindergarten children at a school operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Bayreuth play under the guidance of a teacher approved by the Education Officer of the Military Government on their first day back to school. German children in the American zone of Germany started back to school during the summer of 1945. First kindergartens were reopened and then the elementary grades. Approximately half-a-mollion children, one-sixth of the estimated three million children of elementary school age in the American zone, were expected to be attendingthe first four grades in 500 grammar schools by the end of the summer. The rest of the grades were expected to reopen in Fall. Bayreuth, where the Nazis schooled their teachers at a special normal school, lost many of its school buildings during the war. Military authorities ar rebuilding the damaged schools and are organizing new faculties.
