U.S. soldiers examine German church in Lucherberg. Soldiers of the First U.S. Army walk through the rubble of a building to examine a wrecked church in the German village of Lucherberg, captured December 11, 1944, after fierce artillery bombardments and infantry assaults to wrost a high observation point in the town from the Germans. Lucherberg, on the way to Pier, overlooks the motor highway from Aachen to Cologne, on the way to Duren and the Roer river. It was captured the same day as Gey, Hoven, Pier and Derichsweiler, in a series of attacks launched to clear a way to the Roer River.
