Captured Nazi accused of killing U.S. prisoners. Major Fulton C. Vowell (left) of El Paso, Texas, and Captain Herschel Auerbach of New York Ciry, both members of War rimes Investigation Team No. 6822 of the Ninth U.S. Army, are shown June 8, 1945, with a captured Nazi SS guard who served as assistant warden of the concentration camp at Berga, Germany. He is accused of killing several U.S. prisoners-of-war. When U.S. forces entered Berga, the guard fled to an old woman's home and hid but was betrayed by German civilians of the town and now awaits trial before a U.S. Military Government Court. Many U.S. soldiers interned at the Berga camp died as the result of Nazi cruelty and atrocities.
