Allied troops hold gun position in Colmar.
Allied troops hold gun position in Colmar. A dead German soldier lies on a snow-covered street in Colmar as Allied forces fight their way into the Alsatian city February 2, 1945. Allied infantrymen stand near anti-tank guns set up in a gasoline station. Units of the first French Army and of the Seventh U.S. Army linked up February 2 inside Colmar, which had been under German control since June 1940. The city was entered by infantry from the east, the Allied troops smashing through heavily mined and barricaded streets. After bitter street fighting, Colmar was liberated February 3. More than 2,500 German prisoners were taken by the First French Army forces, which freed on the same day the bitterly-contested town of Cernay, 30 kilometers southwest of Colmar.
