Braunlage Forest atrocity discovered. The bodies of Russian, Polish, French and Italian prisoners of the Germans were found by troops of the First Infantry Division of the First U.S. Army as they advanced through Braunlage Forest southeast of Bornburg, Germany, These victims, clad in striped prison garb, were hastily shot in the head by the Germans before they fled the area. Bornburg was entered April 17, 1945, and the atrocity was discovered by troops mopping up in the area.
