' Scenes In Liberated Athens.
' Scenes In Liberated Athens. The RAF was represented in the British forces which entered Athens on Saterday and Sunday (14th/15th Oct) and received a King's welcome. No scene of greeting to liberators in any capital could have equalled this one. It was overwhelming and touching in its fervour. After three and a half years of Axis oppression, the ancient city, which had suffered so much, broke all restraint and went delirious with joy. Picture shows: British soldiers of an Airborne Division (wearing berets) making their way through enthusiastic crowds in the streets of Athens. Everywhere they went Greeks were shaking them by the hand and trying to kiss them. '
