' U.S. Medical Corpsmen Treat Japanese Children On Okinawa Island. U.S. medical corpsmen care for Japanese children injured during fighting on March 31, 1945, when U.S. forces invaded Okinawa Island, in the Ryukyu (Loochee) group, 375 miles (600 km) south of Japan. The children were brought to the first aid station set up under a tent to have their wounds treated and bandaged. Okinawa is one of the 140 Ryukyu islands, formed by the peaks of a submerged mountain chain, which the Japanese call their `stepping stones to Formosa`. The population is estimated at 840.000 persons. Its capture will make possible an intensification of Allied sea and air attacks on military targets in the Japanese home islands and in stolen territory. '
