' Filipinos Greet U.S. Troops Landing In Southern Luzon. Filipinos gather around an American Flag on the beach of the Zambales coast of Luzon to welcome U.S. 8th Army troops arriving in LST's (landing ship, tanks) on January 29, 1945, for a landing 55 air-line miles (88 km) northwest of Manila, the Philippine capital. Driving across the main Philippine island from the beachheads, the 8th Army units forced a junction with 6th Army units to gain control of all roads leading into Bataan Peninsula. The units of the U.S. 6th Army entered Manila on February 4, 1945. '
