Dutch leave Kerkrade.
1944
Dutch leave Kerkrade. An elderly cripple leaves the village of Kerkrade, Holland, in her wheelchair, a small child nestling in her lap. The Dutch were ordered from Kerkrade by the Germans during the bitter fighting which took place in this region as, inch by inch, the Allied armies forged closer to the German border. Later, German soldiers were found in civilan clothes among the evacuees by U.S. soldiers after they had been pointed out by the Dutch.
