Death rather than dishonor. Japanese troops prefer to commit Hara-kiri rather than surrender to a Marine which they believe is dishonorable. These two Imperial Japanese Marines were no exception but they did not have time to use a sword, the customary weapon. They placed the muzzle of their rifles against their foreheads and pulled the trigger with their toes. The one in the background still has his toe on the trigger. NI 9269
